Sasha and Malia Obama might not have seen their Dad as much as they liked in 2007 and 2008. The Senator from Illinois was on the road, campaigning hard to become the next President of the United States. He openly thanked the seven and ten year old for their understanding and good behavior during his Victory Speech in Chicago on election night November 4, 2008 by publicly granting them a new puppy.
As the days wind down to the time the Obama's move into their new home on Pennsylvania Avenue for the next four years, the President-elect pens a letter to his beloved daughters.
In the letter Obama admits it was a long campaign that "hasn't always been easy" on their family. He writes that the new puppy cannot make up for the time he spent away, but says there is a reason he wanted to run for the Oval office. Obama points to his children and the children of the nation as the inspiration for his campaign.
He tells his girls he "loves them more than you will ever know. And I am grateful every day for your patience, poise, grace and humor as we prepare to start our new life together in the White House."
Journalists who covered Obama on the campaign trail say he often spoke of his wife Michelle or his children during down times. He once told the story to a pack of reporters about Sasha losing a tooth and how much the tooth fairy cost in his Chicago neighborhood.
The letter will be published in Parade Magazine on January 18th. An on-line version is available now.
