The Colorado Springs Sky Sox got off to a tough start to their current road trip by losing three straight games to the Portland Beavers in the four game series. After winning the first game of the series, the bats cooled off for the Sky Sox and they scored a mere four runs over the next three games combined. Three of those runs came last night, as the Beavers dominated the Sky Sox 7-3.
Portland pounded Sky Sox started Jason Hirsh, coming up with six hits, seven runs and four walks early in the game. Hirsh (5-6) last just 2.2 innings and raised his ERA up to 6.73, hurting his chances of being called up to the Rockies anytime soon. On the flip side, Will Inman (1-4) pitched six strong innings for the Beavers, scattering six hits, two runs and walk, while striking out four in his win.
Chad Huffman gave the Beavers the early lead with his three-run home run (12) in the first inning. Sean Kazmar capped off the Hirsh demolition with his two-run home run (4) in the third inning, giving the Beavers an early 7-1 lead that they would never surrender.
Daniel Ortmeier (36), Christian Colonel (35), and reliever Kurt Birkins (1) picked up the three scattered RBIs in the game for Colorado Springs. The Sky Sox bullpen pitched 5.1 scoreless innings in relief after the early game meltdown by Hirsh. The combined relief effort came from Birkins (3.0), Ben Julianel (1.1), and Matt Belisle (1.0).
The Sky Sox losing streak is now at three, and they will leave Portland and travel to Salt Lake to face the Bees for five games. The Sky Sox took two out of three from the Bees last week in Colorado Springs, so hopefully they can get back on track. They will face Shane Loux (0-2, 6.30) in game one.
It will be the last series before the all-star break for Triple-A teams. The Sky Sox will send three players to the minor league all-star game. Eric Young Jr. headlines the team with his .290 average, three home runs, 26 RBIs, 47 stolen bases, and 71 runs scored. Also making the all-star team is outfielders Matt Miller and Matt Murton. Miller is batting .324, with five home runs, 64 RBIs, 104 hits, and 26 doubles. Matt Murton boasts a 29-game hitting streak, a .385 average, 46 RBIs, nine home runs, and 14 doubles. The all-star game will be held on July 15th at Portland's PGE Park.
