The Colorado Springs Sky Sox losing woes continued last night and the start of their 12 game road trip doesn't look very promising. A trip to Utah to visit the Salt Lake Bees has the Sky Sox in a quick 0-2 hole for the three game series, with game three slated for tonight.
In game one it was one swing of the bat that overwhelmed the Sky Sox. The Sky Sox jumped out to a lead in the first inning when Eric Young Jr. drew a leadoff walk and promptly stole second and third base, his 39th and 40th steals of the season. Matt Murton singled Young in to give the Sky Sox the early 1-0 lead. Salt Lake recorded a couple of doubles in the bottom half of the first to tie the game, but the Sky Sox would score again in the second, with RBI's from Christian Colonel and Sal Fasano to re-take the lead 3-1. It would be the last lead the Sky Sox would hold on the day, as Jason Hirsh loaded up the bases in the third inning and the Bees' Brandon Wood made him pay. Wood connected on the first pitch he saw and drove it out for the grand slam (15) and the Bees never looked back. A couple of errors in the fourth inning helped the Bees gain some insurance and build their lead all the way up to 8-3. The Sky Sox would get two back in the fifth inning off of Matt Murton's two-run home run (5), but it would be the closest they would get the rest of the way.
Brad Salmon, Jose Arrendondo, and Jeremy Hill combined for four shut out innings the rest of the way and Salt Lake took game one 8-5. David Austen improved to 2-3 on the season and Austen picked up his 14th save. Jason Hirsh took the loss for the Sky Sox, dropping to 4-4. The beating that Hirsh took will most likely delay his return to the majors even longer, as he gave up seven earned runs on nine hits in just five innings, raising his ERA to an ugly 6.16 for Colorado Springs.
If the pitching was a problem for the Sky Sox in game one, it was the hitting that hindered the in game two against Salt Lake. In his Triple-A debut for the Salt Lake Bees, Trevor Bell (1-0) shut down the Sky Sox, with a complete game two-hitter, and the Bees won 1-0. Bell struck out four and waked none in the gem, facing the minimum 27 batters. A mere three Colorado Springs batters reached base, with two thrown out on double plays and the other caught stealing. The Bees scored the game's only run on a suicide squeeze bunt by Adam Pavkovich that drove in Matt Brown.
Franklin Morales had an excellent game, bouncing back from the shellacking he took in his last start. Morales (0-2) went 6 1/3 innings, giving up just five hits and one run, while striking out three. It was a good sign for the Rockies as Morales tries to make his way back to Denver. Matt Murton was the lone bright spot in the first two games, going 4-7 and raising his batting average up to .414 in th process.
The Sky Sox will try to avoid the sweep tonight and snap their skid with Alan Johnson (6-2) taking the hill.
