After splitting the first four games of the series against the Las Vegas 51's, the Sky Sox looked poised to win the rare five-game series on Sunday. Starting pitcher Matt Belisle (0-1) no-hit Las Vegas through the first three innings, the only problem was the 51's starting pitcher David Purcey (2-1) was simultaneously no-hitting the Sky Sox.
Las Vegas got their bats going first in the fourth inning, as J.P. Arencibia drove in the game's first run on an RBI single and Belisle's unraveling begun. After getting the first out of the inning, Belisle walked the next batter to load the bases. Two more runs would come around in the inning on a fielder's choice to give the 51's an early 3-0 lead.
Purcey kept his dominance going for Las Vegas, taking his no-hit bid into the fifth inning, until Edwin Bellorin wrecked it with a single up the middle. Purcey, on the other hand, didn't unravel, as he shut out the Sky Sox until the eighth inning.
Colorado Springs was finally able to make some noise with their bats in the eighth, when an Eric Young Jr. single forced the 51's to finally make a call to their bullpen. Mike McCoy drove in the first run for Colorado Springs off of Purcey's replacement Brian Bullington, and Matt Miller followed that with a two-RBI double. Two of the runs were charged to Purcey, and Bullington gave up three more in the inning, but it was too little too late for the Sky Sox, as they were already behind 6-0 by that point. Jeremy Accardo closed out the game for Las Vegas, putting Colorado Springs' comeback to rest and recording his ninth save of the season.
Fifty-cent hot dog day brought out 4,689 fans to see off their hometown Sky Sox. The Sky Sox will go on a 12 game road trip, starting with a three-game set in Salt Lake City. The big right-hander Jason Hirsh will get the call for game one, as he continues his ascent back to the majors.
