We were happy to go to the Korean Garden Restaurant at 112 Harvard Ave. in Allston Village this afternoon. Here's the lowdown:
I ordered plain tukbokki (an assortment of vegetables in spicy sauce served with rice cake according to the menu.). My companion ordered bokkumbap (fried rice with a choice of kimchee, vegetable, beef or shrimp), she chose the kimchee version which comes covered with a fried egg. Mine was like a Korean version of spaghetti. Her's was a Korean version of fried rice. Service was very attentative with an army of wait people pitching in to make sure we enjoyed our meal.
The kicker of this place is the side dishes. We were informed that everyone gets the same assortment when they order a meal. Twelve little dishes of side dishes were placed between us, each holding a few bites of some morsel, most of them pickled vegetables in sauce though some were bean sprouts, one contained a kind of spinach, one seaweed, one a kind of pickled beef and one brine shrimp. The waiter who put them down said, "If you want more of anything just let me know. There's no charge." He also mentioned there was no charge when he went to refill my Diet Coke.
These are nice people operating under the sound business philosophy of lots of freebies. We left full to the gullet and had plenty to talk about on the trip home wards on the B Line. Allston Village is an eclectic neighborhood that is always a pleasure to visit and dine in.
