Wouldn't it be great if your doctor prescribed a warm, nice smelling bath each night or a soothing massage?  Since infertility causes a great amount of stress, aromatherapy can offer many benefits in helping to reduce anxiety and depression. It can be especially helpful for couples undergoing fertility treatments.

Aromatherapy uses essential oils to promote emotional well-being.  These essential oils are concentrated liquids extracted from flowers, leaves, and other parts of a plant.  The essential oils can be used as a room spray, in your bath, as a massage oil, or a few drops can be placed on your pillow before bed.

Following is a list of some of the oils used to treat anxiety and stress associated with infertility.  Also listed are common ailments each oil treats.

Rose-depression, stress

Geranium-anxiety

Melissa-depression, anxiety, insomnia

Chamomile-insomnia, stress

Lavender-anxiety, depression

Jasmine-calms nerves

Ylang ylang-relaxes mind and body

Sandalwood-depression

Peppermint-headache

Make sure to talk with your doctor about using aromatherapy as an alternative treatment.  Many fertility clinics use aromatherapy and other natural treatments like fertility massage along with more traditional treatments such as IVF.

You can make your own essential oils at home or buy them ready to use. If you decide to use essential oils at home, please read these safety tips on correctly using essential oils.
