In his third year hosting the tournament, Tiger finally got his win. He did it by getting off to an early lead and keeping a consistent performance throughout. Tiger had a mission at the beginning off this tournament and he completed it today. After a rough U.S. Open, he came back with a very strong performance at the AT&T National at the Congressional Country Club in Washington D.C.
He started the round making pars on the first five holes, and then he went to the 518-yard par 4 6th hole. Tiger bogeyed the 6th hole yesterday, but he had other ideas today. He sunk a 14 foot putt for birdie that was downhill and over a lip in the green, to go to eleven under par. The next hole was a par 3 and his tee shot was within 6 feet of the hole. His birdie putt had a slight break that Tiger read nicely and he sunk the birdie to go to twelve under par.
Tiger’s score stayed at twelve under until the par 3 10th hole. He hit a solid tee shot and then a 31 foot 7 inch putt that he hit very hard and knocked into the center of the cup to get to thirteen under par. This great putt was important for Tiger’s momentum going into the 11th hole, which he had made double bogey on yesterday and bogeys the two days before. The hole obviously was in Tiger’s head because he hit his drive far right into a hazard and he slammed his club into the ground. Tiger eventually sunk a difficult 5 foot putt on the hole for a bogey to go back to twelve under par.
Tiger was now tied with Hunter Mahan, who finished at twelve under earlier in the day. At the 16th hole, Tiger had made a birdie on this par 5 every day in the tournament. Tiger’s first two shots were in the left rough and then the right rough, but he saved himself with a fine chip and an amazing 19 foot putt to finally go ahead of Hunter Mahan, who was waiting in the clubhouse. These putts are the clutch putts we didn’t see Tiger make at the U.S. Open, and now it looks like we could see the old Tiger Woods at the Open Championship (aka the British Open) in two weeks.
Tiger played the next two holes safe and got pars on them both to win the AT&T National. Woods had very good statistics this tournament. His driving distance average was 312.4 yards, which was ranked fourth in the tournament. His greens in regulation percentage was 76.4% and his putts per green in regulation was 1.673, which are both tied for third in the tournament.
This whole week was about Tiger Woods and he said after the tournament that he could feel his dad looking down on him this week. Now he is getting ready to try to win his first major of the year at the Open Championship in two weeks. This was the third time the tournament was held and third time was a charm this week in Washington D.C. for Tiger Woods.
