Friends and family gather together each year to see spectacular fireworks together, "Ooohhhing" and "Ahhing" over the beautiful colors, designs and displays.  But with fireworks comes crowds and quite often friends and family do not know where to go to view those bright lights.  In the big city of Houston there are many firework displays, events and festivals planned for the 4th of July holiday and among these here are my "picks."

Location: Eleanor Tinsley Park

Presented by Shell this year's event salutes Houston's military families and heroes and honors the 40th anniversary of NASA's Apollo XI Lunar Landing. Admission is free.  A concert featuring Clay Walker will begin at 8:00 p.m. followed by the largest land based fireworks display in the nation.  Expect big crowds for this one!

A Star Spangled Salute

Location: Miller Outdoor Theater

At 8:00 p.m. the Houston Symphony will begin it's all-American salute to Independence Day.  Insiders information: Bring blankets or chairs for sitting on the lawn as seating will go fast.  Picnic baskets are permitted by NO beverages.

Red, Hot, and Blue Festival

Location:  Woodlands Town Center

Family friendly and fun activities including appearances by Dora the Explorer, Spiderman, parades and fireworks. Admission is free, but tickets are required for refreshments and activities. Fireworks begin approximately 9:15 p.m.  Cool off during the day on a water taxi with the family.

Bayou Bend Fourth of July Celebration

Location: Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens

Time: 1:00-5:00 p.m.

Free admission to this 4th of July celebration that features an interactive demonstration about the American flag, a musical tribute and a reading of the Declaration of Independence.  Refreshments are served after the reading.

Explore Independence Day through the decades with celebrations in a historic setting. The celebration includes a vintage style baseball game.

Other celebrations, events and fireworks around the Houston area include

Kemah Boardwalk fireworks at 9:30 p.m.
