Houston remembers the service of our veterans with these celebrations, activities and special events.
Houston Salutes American Heroes
The ceremony honoring Houston area veterans begins at 10 a.m. on the steps of City Hall and is followed by the largest Veterans Day Parade ever in Houston, with more than 130 entries. The parade begins at the corner of Texas Avenue and Smith Street.
Free parking will be available for Veteran's Day activities between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in Theatre District parking.
Rice University honors Veterans
More than 100 Veterans among Rice University’s faculty, staff and students will be honored on Nov. 11 2009 at 11 a.m. with a ceremony in the Ray Courtyard of the Rice Memorial Center. Selected because of his outstanding contributions to Rice University and his military service, Dr. George Bennett from Biochemistry and Cell Biology will be this year's special honoree . Presidential Visiting Fellow Colonel Daniel Ragsdale and ROTC member Josh Kirlin will give remarks. The Shepherd School's Brenton Ryan will sing the national anthem, and the MOB will provide music. Employees and students who are veterans are invited to wear their uniforms. The ceremony will be moved to the chapel in the event of rain.

Military personnel and their families can visit this interesting historic monument free of charge in celebration of Veterans Day. This includes free admission to: the 489-foot elevator to the top of the Monument and view the land where the Battle of San Jacinto was fought, the Houston Ship Channel; viewing of the digital presentation Texas Forever!! The Battle of San Jacinto; a tour of “Developing Houston:” Photographic Treasures from the Cecil Thomson Collection. Identification will be required for free admission.
Applebee’s Active Military and Veterans eat free
Applebee’s is providing a free entree for all active military and veterans on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2009. Choose from six different entrees from a special menu, which includes favorites such as Fiesta Lime Chicken and 7oz. House Sirloin. The Houston Bar Association offers Veterans' Legal Advice Clinic
Press Release: On Saturday, November 14, 2009, the HBA will sponsor a Veterans' Legal Advice Clinic from 9:00 a.m. until noon at American Legion Post 560, 3720 Alba Road, Houston, TX 77018. All veterans and spouses of deceased veterans can receive legal advice and counsel. Veterans who are eligible and need further legal representation will be referred to a pro bono attorney. No appointment is necessary.
Special discounts at The Home Depot and Lowe’s to Veterans, active duty and their families
Special discounts for veterans this year are offered at Lowe’s and The Home Depot. These home improvement stores are giving active duty military, veterans, retirees, National Guard and their families a 10 percent discount off their purchases. Save through Wednesday, November 11, at The Home Depot and through Sunday, November 15, at Lowe’s. Customers must show a military ID or other proof of service.
Free folding canes from Hugo Salutes Our Veterans
A nationwide program, “Hugo® Salutes Our Veterans,” will be giving away 25,000 Hugo® Folding Canes to U.S. military veterans who need mobility assistance at all Sam’s Club locations. According to the press release, “Sam’s Club Membership is not required. Veterans who receive a cane will also get a free One-Day Sam’s Club Pass. Proof of U.S. military service may be required.” The blue folding cane with an ergonomic grip handle retails for $29.99. Limited quantities per club, available while supplies last.
