Trick or Treat is fast approaching and as it does as parents we could use a little reminder of the do's and don't of keeping our children safe while they are trick or treating.

Since the days when I trick or treated I have known the rules of:

  1. Don't go into people's houses
  2. Keep a light with me so I can be seen as the darkness of evening approaches.
  3. Don't eat any candy until mom and dad check it to make sure it is "safe" for consumption. To be honest I think this one was just so that they could pick and choose what candy they wanted for their own.

But today I received an excellent video and list of trick or treating safety tips from a former police officer of Forney Texas, and now Kaufman County Crime Examiner.  These are safety tips that every parent should read. While she mentions country roads in her area, we should note that in the Houston and surrounding areas, not all have street lamps, especially those neighborhoods that are growing.

While parents consider what products like flashlights and reflective tape can help keep their children safe they should be aware of today's consumer protection notice of a recall of Halloween flashlights sold by Target stores across the United States. This recall is due to overheating and melting of these flashlights leaving parents and children open to burn injuries. Approximately 600,000 of these flashlights have been sold.

There are two types of flashlights under recall the small orange flashlight on a keychain as well as the larger hand held orange flashlight with Halloween stencils.  Prices for these products were $1.00 and $2.50 respectively.

If you were planning on using one of the Target Halloween Flashlights don't.  Return them to a Target near you for a full refund.

Report any injury due to the Halloween flashlight here.

Happy and Safe Trick or Treating!
