In an interview with the BBC, Transformers star Shia LeBeouf hinted at another Indiana Jones film. The last film saw Dr. Jones discovering the (extraterrestrial) origins of a Crystal Skull. The movie didn't fare so well with fans and critics, but it grossed enough money (apparently), to make Steven Spielberg consider a sequel.
Many Indiana Jones devotees waited far too many years, just to see Indy become a father and get hitched, all in the same movie. It was a far cry from the 'blaze-of-glory' ending the character seemed to deserve. In the days when the professor, who was more of a tomb raider than an archaeologist---battled treasure hunters for the elusive secrets of antiquity---you could never see the man slowing down. And yeah, Harrison Ford has gotten a little long in the tooth, but c'mon...so did the Duke and so did Sean Connery. It never stopped them from enduring.
Sometimes heroes, no matter how old they get, they keep on truckin'. It's more in the aura they build around themselves and less in the human they become when they set the whip down on the nightstand and kick off the boots for the night. Indiana Jones was supposed to be one of those heroes who never slowed down; never went quietly into that good night. For that, I am grateful to both Spielberg and Lucas, because they could have sent Indy to hero heaven, but instead they gave him the girl (Karen Allen as Marian Ravenwood, thank you very much).
It was the girl everyone wanted him to get, so it's all good. But his story is not over and his adventures have yet to be completed. If there is going to be an Indiana Jones part 5, then the story shouldn't belong to a younger, sprightlier version. The story shouldn't belong to another generation of the Jones clan. Should there be a 5th Indiana Jones film, it should belong to the man with the bullwhip who battled the condemned souls of theArk of the Covenant, escaped the almost certain disembowelment at the expense of the Goddess Shiva...and discovered the truth about the holy grail.
Because Shia LeBeouf is fun to watch, but he's no Harrison Ford.
