Werewolves have been Hollywood's proverbial underdog. No pun intended, but with the success of Vampires, Zombies and Ghosts it's hard not to need that one underplayed monster to come and go every decade or so. It's refreshing and it's a necessity (and judging by the popularity of Shakira's 'She Wolf', it's hip too). It keeps Horror (and sometimes Sci-fi) from going stale. Some things can't be helped, like overhyped schlock for instance. But sometimes all can be forgiven if the cast is good enough.
Mostly, all things are forgiven if something so old it's new again comes along. The Wolf Man was first popularized by the great Lon Chaney, Jr. The year was 1941, at a time when most movie monsters were more aesthetics in lieu of special effects. Creepy ghouls from the unknown, coming to steal women and souls was enough to keep the movie going public coming back for more.
But these are different times.
For The Wolfman to succeed now, it needs to be either completely unconventional or entirely true to old school formulaic monster movies. Needless to say, Benicio Del Toro is pretty convincing as the American bitten and cursed by a werewolf. The cast also includes Sir Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving. Two great posters have already been issued.
The Wolfman comes to theaters February 12th, 2011.
