Some time ago, back when Ron Moore's re-imagined Battlestar Galactica graced us with its dark, antagonistic view of humanity at its brink, there was a 'Plan'. The Plan was something that although mentioned from season to season, was as elusive as bigfoot. It seemed Ron Moore had created the ultimate MacGuffin.
As BSG fans eagerly anticipated the moment the Cylon 'Plan' would be revealed, Ron Moore caved and admitted there was no plan. The 'idea' of a Cylon Plan existing was scrapped and the end of the series came and went without resolve. Some fans embraced it. Others, to this day, would gladly march up to Ron Moore's doorstep in a scene reminiscent of Frankenstein, beckoning the monster to show himself.
Well, the debate may be over (depending on whether or not this latest BSG film falls in step with the mythology of the show), because on October 27th, Battlestar Galactica: The Plan comes to DVD and Blu Ray. The straight to video tale of the Cylon's Plan to destroy humanity is told from the perspective of the Cylons whose machinations of a world without humans are what carried BSG from the Miniseries through to season 2.5.
The movie stars Edward James Olmos, Michael Hogan, Tricia Helfer, Grace Park, Dean Stockwell and Kate Vernon. It was written by Jane Espenson and directed by Edward James Olmos. The DVD features deleted scenes, feature commentary and a great short on visual effects, while the Blu Ray features much of the same, but with some bonuses like BSG Trivia, D-Box and BD LIVE: Battlestar Galactica Trivia.
Whether the Plan was ever fully realized (by the Cylons or the writers) doesn't matter. For most Battlestar Galactica fans, the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the Galactica universe one more time is more than enough. And if Edward James Olmos has his way and sales for The Plan are substantial, BSG fans may be seeing more movies in the future. Now that's a 'plan' I can believe in.
You can find Battlestar Galactica: The Plan at the NBCUniversal store.
