According to Google Trends the ten cities that search the term “bicycle” the most using Google's search engine are:
1.Denver Colorado
2.Portland Oregon
3.Seattle Washington
4.Sacramento California
5.Pleasanton California
6.Austin Texas
7.San Francisco California
8.San Diego California
9.Melbourne Australia
10.Minneapolis Minnesota
These towns are not necessarily the most popular cycling communities but they do tend to search the word “bicycle” in Google more than any other towns.
What really stood out to me was Pleasanton California. According to Wikipedia the population of Pleasanton California in 2007 is estimated at 66,544 people. There are multiple bike shops in Pleasanton and in the nearby towns there are even more bike shops. I also learned that PerformanceBike.com has an outlet in Pleasanton. PerformanceBike is One of the Juggernauts of the mail order/ and internet sales of bicycle parts.
I did some further digging and found many more bicycle and bicycle related companies either based in Pleasanton or having an store, warehouse, or sales employees.
One of the other larger companies in Pleasanton is Chain Reaction Bicycles which is billed as the “Largest Trek OCLV-Carbon Bike Dealer In The USA”
Bicycle company employees tend to cycle more than other companies. Pleasanton has many bicycle related employees and this may be one of the reasons for Pleasanton California to be ranked so high out of all the cities and towns in the english speaking world.
I assumed that if Pleasanton has so many bicycle riders then their must be a lot of paths and mapped bike routes. I checked out MapMyRide.com and Pleasanton California has 319 route listings. Obviously Pleasanton has a very active roadie community. I'm also pretty sure of what they search for on Google when they get home from riding a route.
