Today, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration declared that El Nino has returned. El Nino is the warming of the tropical Pacific Ocean which causes the jet stream to move. With this weather pattern, the Atlantic Hurricane season is less active.

However, 1992 was also an El Nino year and that was also the same year that one of the worst hurricanes ever occurred, Hurricane Andrew. As the winter months approach, conditions may not be the same dry weather that usually occurs. Several inches of rain are also to be expected throughout this pattern.

The winter of 2006-2007, was the El Nino year and and there were several rounds of severe weather outbreaks, Christmas 2006, is just one example of that. This is when a small tornado damaged several homes in northern Hillsborough and southern Pasco County. This El Nino is a moderate one and should last until spring.
