The idea of sharing transportation isn't a new one, by-far.  Teenagers demonstrate it all the time: packing as many friends into their vehicles as possible.  Even a good number of adults practice sharing a ride by participating in carpools to work and school.  It's generally a good idea.  Sharing the ride gets everyone where they need to go at a lesser cost both economically and to the environment.

But what about airplanes?  What works on the ground doesn't always muster up in the air, but this time, it makes perfect sense.  Anyone planning a flight knows that it can eat away at your budget very quickly.  Sometimes it even makes a flight impractical.  So, sharing the cost by bringing along a fellow aviator can make your flight possible or, perhaps, extend your flight at the same costs.

This begs the question; how do I find a fellow aviator to share the ride with?  Work carpools are easily organized and teenagers have a natural ability to flock together, but what about general aviation travelers?  The very nature of general aviation travel is one of non-conformity and freedom to travel at will.  This is where websites like Pilotsharetheride.com and Pilotoutlook.com come into place.

Websites such as these bring the two sides of the equation together.  The people with the planned flight can post it to see if anyone wants to come along and the people looking to tag along can search through the planned flights.  One of them finds a match and they contact each other; next thing you know, both parties have a discounted flight packed with fun.

This system of pooled travel offers more than the savings; it affords those in the aviation community the chance to meet new people.  Making friends is a large part of being a good aviator and spending a few hours in a plane with another pilot is sure to gain you a friend.  The system also offers pilots the chance to share the cost of building time or practicing.  A large portion of the flights posted on Pilotsharetheride.com are for local flights; a pilot trying to gain time at a lesser cost.

So, next time you plan on traveling and have the need for an adventure, check out a few ride-sharing websites.  You might find an unbelievable deal on a personal flight or you might be able to split the cost of your vacation.
