Vegan cookbook How It All Vegan: Author Sarah Kramer at Bookshop Santa Cruz with free food samples

The bestselling cookbook How It All Vegan!: Irresistible Animal-Free Diet by co-authors Sarah Kramer and Tanya Barnard was first published 10 years ago. A tenth-anniversary edition was published on September 1, 2009, and to celebrate, Bookshop Santa Cruz is hosting a reading, tasting, and signing next Thursday evening (November 12).

Food will be served – created by Bookshop Santa Cruz staff from the book’s vegan recipes (I sampled the recipes at the Pim Techamuanvivit event on October 21, and believe me, Bookshop staff members know what they’re doing in the kitchen!).

The special edition of How It All Vegan! includes a new color photo section, new recipes, and a new introduction by Ms. Kramer. Sections include alternatives and substitutions, vegan entrees, vegan sauces and spreads, vegan odds and sods, vegan kids stuff, and vegan house and home. The incredibly comprehensive index is a great tool; you can look things up by ingredient (“apple” has 17 listings, such as “applesauce as butter substitute” and several recipes including curried apple soup), by category (snacks, breakfast, beauty products, remedies), or even cooking style (such as mashed or scalloped).

Ms. Kramer operates the website GoVegan.net, and has written columns for Herbivore Magazine and Veg News. She also runs a tattoo shop “The Tattoo Zoo” with her husband, artist Gerry Kramer. Ms. Kramer has published several books. Her most recent one before this, Vegan a Go-Go! (published 2008), contains recipes and tips geared toward traveling and is small-sized for easy transport.

The original edition of How It All Vegan! was the author's first book. It all began when she made a small cookbook zine to give to friends and family for Christmas gifts one year. People loved it so much she decided it was worth exploring and the zine eventually grew into the best-selling cookbook. How It All Vegan was awarded the VegNews Veggie award for Best Cookbook twice since its publication in 1999, and author Kramer was awarded the VegNews award for favorite cookbook author in 2005. November is National Vegan Month, and November 1 was World Vegan Day. This is the perfect time to listen to a renowned vegan author and taste some delicious vegan food – come explore veganism at Bookshop (or celebrate it if that’s already the path you follow!).
