A new food-related competition TV series is in the works, and the grand-prize winner will get to launch his or her own chain of restaurants in four cities across the country! The show will be on NBC, and “Top Chef” production company Magical Elves will be cooking it up. The show's tentative title is “United Plates of America.”
The series will open with contestants pitching restaurant plans to an investor panel. In the following episodes, contestants will face challenges related to topics such as their restaurant's concept, menu, and marketability – plus skills including an ability to supervise staff.
“This is the first time the culinary and business worlds have come together in a big event series where the prize is one of the largest in reality TV history,” said NBC's executive vice president of alternative programming Paul Telegdy (also known as NBC’s “reality chief”). “Not only will viewers get to watch the competition unfold, they'll be able to eat at the winning restaurant immediately after the show's finale.”
The show’s panelists and premiere date have not been announced. But NBC did disclose that the winner will be selected by a panel of “some of the most important names in both the dining and business worlds who will invest their own money in the final restaurant chain.”
The creative, highly skilled Magical Elves team has already launched Top Chef spinoff Top Chef Masters, which is currently shooting its second season (view a recipe from Top Chef Master Elizabeth Falkner). The team is also in charge of the future spinoff Top Chef: Just Desserts.
