Two weeks ago, over 1,000 students from Boston University came to school a week early to do close to 20,000 hours of community service in less than 5 days through a community service program at BU called FYSOP, or First-Year Student Outreach Project.
The students, made up of 850 freshman, over 180 staff (made up of upper class men), 18 coordinators and 3 program managers focused on 9 different issue areas in and around the city: children, disabilities, elders, environment, hunger, homelessness & housing, human rights, gender focus and HIV/AIDS awareness.
Coming Early, Doing Good: FYSOP celebrates 20 years
The program, which has grown in the past 4 years from 500 freshman to 850, this year, celebrated its 20th year by accepting all freshman who applied for the once competitive placement in their favorite issue area.
The program, which is extremely popular on campus, is not for everyone, but immensely popular among freshman looking to do more than volunteer. While some want to just move in early, others are there to make long last friendships and get a jump start on their freshman year.
