On Monday, Boston University pledged $10 million with other top-notch universities nation-wide for the Center for Global Health and Development.
The money will go toward research and education in improving health in third world countries. The task will connect all facets of the universities including everyone from the medical campus to engineers from the Charles River campus, those from the schools of social work and public health and many more, according to the Boston Globe.
President Brown announced the university’s plans at the national consortium’s inaugural conference yesterday in Maryland on the National Institutes of Health campus. Brown was one of five university presidents to attend of the 58 universities with international programs in health and development in North America.
While some question BU’s involvement in the project, others commend the university’s efforts to keep up with other schools in the region that offer competing major global health programs, including 4 others in New England: Harvard, Brown, Yale and Dartmouth.
