Peru Alta Gold, a BuyWell fair trade Café Femenino coffee, will hit the shelves of select Kroger brand stores nationwide by the end of July. It will also be sold in some Whole Foods stores in Colorado, and is already available in H-E-B stores in Texas. This is certainly a coup for women coffee growers in Peru. And it’s a boon for consumers with a social conscience who love good coffee.
Most people have heard of “fair trade” coffee, but how many know about Café Femenino? Probably not many – but that’s about to change. Café Femenino coffee is produced by a group of women coffee growers who united in order to take charge of their futures and empower themselves economically and socially.
Women in this country take basic rights for granted, but most women coffee producers live in environments where they have no income, no title to their land, are abused and abandoned by their husbands, and have no standing in their society.
In 2004, 460 women coffee growers in Peru took matters into their own hands, organizing a cooperative to grow, harvest and produce their own coffee, called Café Femenino. Organic Products Trading Company (OPTCO) along with CECANOR Cooperative, PROASSA, CICAP and Cordaid joined forces to support the women in their efforts to achieve their goals. OPTCO is the sole importer of Café Femenino coffee, and sells it to more than 80 roasters, who pay a premium price above the fair trade price. That money goes directly back to the women producers and helps them to improve the health and well-being of their families and communities.
So if you enjoy drinking good coffee at home, and you like the idea of contributing to the fair treatment and decent living of the women who grew that liquid gold, try the Peru Alta Gold roast. Coming soon to a Kroger near you.
