This weekend Midwest Open tournaments are taking place throughout Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Illinois will host the boys 18s, starting July 31 in Lake Forest, and boys 16s, starting August 3 in Northbrook. Top junior boys players from the Midwest, and around the country, will be flocking to the Chicago area in the hopes of taking home the trophy, and some more wins, before Nationals begin on August 7.
The boys 18s Open Championships begins registration this Thursday, July 30 at 5:30 p.m., with a complimentary dinner for all players, coaches, and parents following sign-in. Seeing as most players at the 18s level will be entering college in the next year or two, the tournament committee will host a forum with a university tennis coach to answer questions about the college recruitment process.
The matches will begin on Friday and continue for four days through Monday, August 3. Top competitors, including two of the top Illinois players in the Midwest—Blake Bazarnik, and Denis Bogatov--will be participating in the tournament, looking to extend their leads before Nationals.
The Boys 16s Open Championships begins on Monday, August 3 and continues through Thursday, August 6. The main site for matches will be Glenbrook South High School, with additional locations at Glenbrook North High School and Highland Park High School. As with the 18s, this tournament is open to players from every section from around the country, drawing talented boys from everywhere, including top ranked Michael Redlicki from Hawthorn Woods, IL.
Currently, the girls 18s Midwest Open is taking place in Columbus, Indiana. The tournament began this past Sunday and final matches will finish up tomorrow, July 30. Representing the state of Illinois are third ranked Katie Zordani and eighth ranked Madeline Lipp. Boys and girls 12s will also play next week in Cincinnati, Ohio, where eighth place Eddie Grabill will compete starting on August 3 and ending August 7.
All tournaments are Level 3 National events with 128 singles matches and 64 doubles with a full feed-in consolation up until the semi-finals.
Anyone is welcome to attend the tournaments and watch some of the best junior players in the country battle it out for the Championship!
