Veterans Day is a United States National Holiday designated to honor all U.S. Military Veterans who have served and been willing to serve in wars that the United States has been involved in throughout its history. Currently the United States military is fighting battles in Iraq and Afghanistan, with U.S. Armed Forces fighting for the freedoms that many Americans too often take for granted. Veteran's Day is always commemorated on November 11 at 11:00 AM, or the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
The military has served and protected the rights and freedoms of Americans and of people around the globe for generations. Major wars that the U.S. has been involved in include the Revolutionary War, Civil War between the States, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm and the War in Iraq. Veterans who have served in the wars, past and present are honored on Veterans Day, as they should be every day. Peacetime veterans are also honored for their willingness to serve and their importance in maintaining peace.
There have been services and ceremonies honoring veterans on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month around the Chicago area, around the nation and at military bases around the world.
Remember the slogan “Thank a Vet for Your Freedom,” on Veterans Day and every day. If you know a vet, take a moment to offer a personal “Thank You” as we all soberly remember the sacrifices required to fight terrorism and to celebrate freedom in the United States.
