Nothing on Earth so beautiful as the final haul on Halloween night.  ~Steve Almond

Trick or treating is a time of great excitement for kids of all ages, but by following some of these safety tips, parents can ensure that their child will stay safe, allowing them to have the maximum amount of fun!

What kids can do:

  1. Carry a bright flashlight, or trick or treat in a well list area. Check batteries before going out! Glow in the dark sticks can be used along with flashlights to maximise visibility.
  2. Stay on the sidewalks, or as close to the side of the road as possible. Walk, don't run - no one wants to get run over!
  3. Just because one car stops, doesn't mean they all will...
  4. Only Trick or Treat at houses with lights on, and only use the front door.
  5. Stay away from any animals you don't know.
  6. Trick or treat with a group of friends, and ALWAYS go with an adult, not matter how "cool" it seems to go without one.

What parents can do:

  1. Provide a good dinner for your child BEFORE trick or treating.
  2. If purchasing a costume, make sure it is made of flame-retartant materials
  3. Incorporate a flashlight, glow sticks, or a flashing safety light into your childs costume - SAFETY FIRST!
  4. ALWAYS trick or treat with your child, or make sure there is another adult going if your child goes with a friend.
  5. Inspect all candy before allowing your child to eat any. Food tampering is rare, but if your child has food allergies, parents should be aware of what their child is consuming.
  6. If your child goes out with another parent or adult for trick or treating, allow them to borrow a fully charged cell phone with the home number on speed dial. Teach them how to call 9-1-1 in case of an emergency.

NH will have many places with Trick or Treat hours, so keep checking back for an updated list! (Last update 10/22/09 - note some changes in dates due to misinformation.)
