1904: Former Red Wings center Ralph “Cooney”Weiland was born on this day in Seaforth, Ontario. Weiland played 87 games for Detroit (1933-35) and scored 24 goals and 44 assists for 68 points. Weiland played 509 games in the NHL over 12 seasons with Detroit, Boston, and Ottawa, and scored 173 goals and 160 assists for 333 points. In 1929-30, as a member of teh Boston Bruins, he scored 43 goals in 44 games and shattered the single season point record with 73 eclipsing the mark of 51 set by Howie Morenz. Weiland was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1971.
1942: Carl Liscombe set an NHLrecord at the time, with seven points in a single game (three goals, four assists) as the Red Wings defeated the New York Rangers 12-5.
1944: Former Red Wings center Al Karlander was born on this day in Lac la Heche, Quebec. Karlander played 212 games for Detroit (1969-73) and scored 36 goals and 56 assists for 92 points.
NHL
1955: Jean Beliveau of the Montreal Canadiens scored four goals during one powerplay to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 4-2 win over the Boston Bruins. Following the season the NHL changed the rules to allow a player to leave the penalty box following a goal.
