In the first transaction following the Stanley Cup victory, Dominik Hasek announced is retirement from the NHL June 9th. .
The Wings winning ways continue for one more night as they collect more hardware at the NHL’s Awards in Toronto on June 12
th. As a team the Wings won the Stanley Cup, The Clarence Campbell Trophy and The President’s Trophy. Individually
Nicklas Lidstrom won his sixth Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman,
Pavel Datsyuk won his third Lady Byng Trophy as the most gentlemanly player, his first Selke trophy as the league’s best defensive forward and the plus/minus award. Chris Osgood and Dominik Hasek combined to win the Jennings Trophy awarded to the team with the lowest goals-against average, and
Henrik Zetterberg had already collected the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff’s most valuable player.
June 20th marked the NHL Entry Draft and the Red Wings used their first round selection to replenish the goaltending position when they drafted Thomas McCollum from the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League. McCollum is currently playing for Team USA at the World Junior Championships being held in Ottawa.
JulyFree agency begins on July 1st and the Wings surprise many by landing the premier player available, Marian Hossa, signing him to a one-year deal worth $7.45-million on July 2nd. Hossa reportedly turned down longer contracts for more money per year from both the Pittsburgh Penguins and Edmonton Oilers in order to sign with Detroit who he felt offered him the best opportunity to win the Stanley Cup. Dallas Drake officially announced his retirement on July 15th.
October
The Wings manage to avoid the Stanley Cup hangover going 7-2-2 in the opening month. Defenseman Brian Rafalski establishes a new franchise record for defensemen by recording at least one point in seven consecutive games to start the season. During that stretch he scores one goal and eight assists. Marian Hossa scores his first goal as a Red Wing on October 18 against the New York Rangers. It also happens to be the overtime winner and the 300th goal of his career.
November
Former Red Wing Igor Larionov is inducted into the Hall of Fame on Monday November 10. The Wings continue to steamroll the opposition with an 8-2-2 mark for the month. The Penguins returned to Detroit for a Stanley Cup rematch and stole a 7-6 come from behind victory led by Jordan Staal’s third period hat trick and assist on the overtime winner.
December
Osgood and Lidstrom move past some legendary names. Osgood collects his 375th career win with a victory over Phoenix on December 13th and moves past Detroit native John Vanbiesbrouck into 12th on the all-time wins list. Next on the list are Mike Vernon and Hasek. On December 4th Lidstrom scores a goal and two assists and past Sergei Fedorov into fourth all-time on the Red Wings career scoring list. With three assists against the Los Angeles Kings, Lidstrom moved past Larry Robinson into eighth all-time in points by a defenseman, and past Denis Potvin into ninth all-time in career assists by a defenseman.
