The Detroit Red Wings 3-1 win on Saturday over the New Jersey Devils was the 369th career victory for goaltender Chris Osgood, which moves him into a tie for 14th all-time with Tom Barrasso. Next on the list in 13th place at 372 wins is Andy Moog.
“I think about wins, that’s the only thing really. I would like to get as high as I can before I’m done playing here,” said Osgood following the game when asked if he thinks about those types of milestones. “I look at it at the start of the season but I haven’t looked at it for a while so I have no idea who is ahead. I know Verny (Mike Vernon) is at 385, that’s one of the guys I look at because I played with him, and I will call him if I pass him one day here. Other than that my goal is to get to 400 and I have no idea where that would put me.”
Four hundred victories would rank 10th all-time and move Osgood past Dominik Hasek, another former teammate.
Brian Rafalski in his first game against his former team assisted on Detroit’s first goal by Marian Hossa just 3:30 into the game.
Rafalski signed as a free agent with the Wings on July 1, 2007, however Detroit did not play New Jersey last season. He played seven seasons with New Jersey from 1999 through 2007.
The only New Jersey Devil player with any connection to Michigan, Brian Rolston from Flint did not play due to a high right ankle sprain. Rolston has missed the last nine games, and has a goal and an assist in four games this season.
The last trade between these two teams was 13 years ago. The Red Wings acquired Viacheslav Fetisov in exchange for a 3rd round choice, which New Jersey used to draft David Gosselin. Gosselin played 13 games in the NHL with Nashville between 1999 and 2002, scoring two goals among three points.
Nicklas Lidstrom’s next point will move him into a tie for 9th all-time in career points by a defenseman with teammate Chris Chelios at 948 points. Next on the list at number eight is Larry Robinson with 958 points
Marian Hossa was selected as the Carhartt hardest working player of the month for October. Hossa led the team in scoring with 15 points (six goals and nine assists), and recorded at least a point in 10 of 11 games.
