The Grass Less Traveled at Zumwalt Park

Grass Less Traveled is a bluegrass band based out of Tulare County that has been entertaining valley residents since 2002. Lead singer Mike Gibson keeps rhythm on the doghouse bass. Mandolin player Tony Pires is not only an accomplished musician, but also a successful inventor. (His creation of the "Tone-Gard", a device designed to increase the volume of the mandolin by holding it away from the player's body, is used by Ricky Skaggs, David Grisman, and many others among the best-known mandolin players in the country.) Guitarist Doug Carlton, formerly of the group String Bandits, is a songwriter as well as an accomplished musician. Rounding out the group is banjo player Steve Hall, who has performed at many venues and entertains bluegrass fans with his lightning-fast banjo licks.

The Grass Less Traveled recently played to an appreciative crowd in Zumwalt Park as part of Tulare's free summer concert series. They have also entertained at the free Bluegrass in the Park summer program at Veterans Memorial Park in Clovis, and have appeared onstage numerous times at the annual Hobbs Grove Bluegrass Festival in Sanger.
