Halloween is a holiday centered on traditions ingrained from childhood. Traditions of being
whatever you wanted to be for an evening, and knocking door to door, collecting as much candy as you could carry. Each year, the child grows, so the bag grows and conversely.
Days following trick or treating are spent in a sugar crazed fog. Then, as you become an adult, sugar and candy often become a “taken by the handfuls,” treat, and there is no more tricking. The consequences of excess, taught from youth, haunt.
Make this Halloween something new. Start a new tradition, and teach a new lesson, on eating well.
One local parent is reinventing Halloween, aiming to make it healthy, sustainable and fun. Corey Colwell-Lipson, launched The Green Year, and launched Green Halloween. Green Halloween aims to teach families how to enjoy a Halloween that’s healthy for families and the environment.
