The Hubble Space Telescope was launched aboard the NASA Discovery, Iraq invaded Kuwait leading to the Gulf War, Emma Watson (yeah thats Hermione) was born, and Jim Henson dies. A both joyous and saddening time in our history, the video game industry leads us once again into imaginary worlds saving us from the distress around us, one level at a time. As the second installment of my throwback series, we visit 1990.

  • (Movie) Back to the Future III
  • (TV) TaleSpin
  • (TV) The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
  • (TV) Tiny Toons
 
Gaming Releases:
  • Konami – Snake's Revenge, A Metal Gear sequel for NES.
  • Konami – Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, The last big release for the MSX2 Computer.
  • Origin – Ultima VI: The False Prophet, the first Wing Commander game.
  • Apogee / ID Software – Commander Keen, noted for its smooth scrolling graphics engine by John Carmack.
  • Capcom – Megaman 3, Introducing Rush and Proto Man.
  • MicroProse – Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon, the first “Tycoon” game.
  • Nintendo – Dr Mario, July in Japan and October in the US.
  • Infogrames – Alpha Waves, By most definitions of the genre it could be considered to be the first 3D platform game.
  • Red Company / Atlus – Bonk's Adventure, released for Turbo Grafx-16
 
Hardware
  • SNK - Neo Geo Advanced Entertainment System.
  • Sega – Sega Game Gear was launched in America in 1991, but 1990 in Japan.
  • Amstrad – Stops the manufacturing of ZX Spectrum.
  • Nintendo – Super Famicon 16 bit console released in Japan.
  • Camerica – Game Genie released in UK and Canada, already released in the US by Galoob
  • NEC – Released the TurboExpress handheld.
 
Founded
  • Edios Interactive – Responsible for Tombraider, Hitman, Thief, Timesplitters, and more.
  • Team 17 – Credited for creating the Worms series.
 
As you can see the 1990's were a great time in gaming history and I play on venturing down the 90's paved path again, perhaps next Throwback Thursday.
