"Ultimate Development Heroes" Miyamoto, Carmack, and Wright top the list.
A survey among 9,000 game developers has spoken via statistic. Develop Magazine reveals who the "Ultimate Development Heroes" of the gaming industry are. Here is the top 10, and a bit of history I dug up about them.
1. Shigeru Miyamoto
Nintendo's superstar developer and brilliant mind behind Mario, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, Pikmin, Nintendogs, Wii Music, and more.
2. John Carmack
After being arrested at age 14 for breaking into a school to steal apple computers, Co founder of id Software, Carmack is known for pioneering the FPS or first person shooter genre. Doom, Quake, Heretic, Wolfenstein, and Commander Keen were some of his many hits.
3. Will Wright
In 1986 Georgia born Will Wright attended what he calls “the world's most important pizza party” where he met Jeff Braun an investor looking for computer gaming opportunities. A year later SimCity was released and launched an empire. SimEarth, SimAnt, SimCity 2000, SimCopter,The Sims Franchise, and spore are all from the mind of Wright.
4. Dave Jones
Founder of Realtime Worlds and co-founder of Rockstar North, Jones is the creative behind the controversial title Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy VII, Crackdown, Blood Money, and many more.
5. Sid Meier
In 1982 Meier and Bill Stealey founded MicroProse. Civilization is one of his most famous games followed by Sid Meier's SimGolf, Railroad Tycoon, and Sid Meier's Pirates!.
6. Peter Molyneux
The best mistake in Molyneux's career was made by the makers of the Commodore 64. Peter's company Taurus was confused with a much larger company named TORUS resulting in the delivery of 10 Amiga Computers. Personally one of my favorite game designers, Molyneux is responsible for Fable, Fable II, Black and White, Dungeon Keeper, and even more.
7. David Braben
Braben is noted for Elite a title written in conjunction with Ian Bell, andthe creation of Virus which is one of the first true “solid” 3d games.
8. Masaya Matsuura
Matsuura originally famous for being a founding member of the bandPSY • S, Became interested in computer games in the early 90's after witnessing the amazing technological advances in computing. It wasn't until 1996 that he would quit his band and found NanaOn-Sha then go on to produce one of the worlds first rhythm games: PaRappa the Rapper. Because of this game he is accredited with creating the genre that DDR and Guitar Hero now reside in.
9. Michael Morhaime
In 1991Morhaime co-founded Silicon & Synapse, later to be known as Chaos Studios then finally in 1994 named Blizzard Entertainment. I really should stop writing here but I will go on for the few that have yet to marvel over his success. Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, Diablo, StarCraft, RPM Racing, Wrath of the Lich King, The Burning Crusade, and The World of Warcraft areall in his impressive lineup.
10. Jonathan Blow
Known for being brutally honest yet extremely intellectual, Blow is the shining hope in the future of gaming. When it comes to new concepts he really knows what will work. I personally would like to take this moment to thank Jonathan Blow for making sure corporations don't ruin all of the good in the start up gaming company. I highly suggest his game Braid.
In closing I would like to thank each and everyone on this list for their contributions to the gaming world. I encourage everyone that found this article interesting to see the links below to further their knowledge of the industry and read about the amazing childhood of modern gaming.
