While his presence in the music industry remained strong, Michael Jackson’s presence in the public eye had long been somewhat forgotten. He had taken time off; time for his children, time for himself, and time for his music. It wasn’t until the announcement of an upcoming tour that the public began to wonder what the star had been up to, and what to expect.
After Jackson’s death, many wondered if the rigorous schedule of tour rehearsals put him over the edge. His personal footage, used in the documentary Michael Jackson's This Is It, silences those who doubted him.
Whether the film was released for a last minute grab to make a fortune of the Jackson name or not, it has proved to be an important tool to show the public that Michael Jackson wasn’t crazed and wasn’t ill.
The rehearsal footage shows a relentless side of MJ, as he worked one on one with individual members of the band. He worked closely with lead guitarist Orianthi Panagaris, and at one point in the show told her that it was her “moment to shine” and that he would “be right there with her.”
The film also showcased Jackson’s love for dance. Whenever music was played, Jackson would either be dancing the choreographed steps, or creating new ones. He maintained a close relationship with the background dancers, calling them his family.
He sang at what seemed to be at his best performance level during these rehearsals. His voice still had that uniqueness to it as it did on the Thriller album. It is also very rare these days to hear an artist sing at such a high quality during rehearsals.
This movie was eye-opening; not only to Michael Jackson’s personality, but to his unparalleled standards of performance. The This It It tour was going to be truly phenomenal and it is a shame that no one got to see it. Jackson was in a league of his own.
