Forty teens from South Los Angeles and Baldwin Park are role models for teens everywhere as they were instrumental in the creation of a new social networking site designed to encourage teens to have a healthier lifestyle.
WereFedup focuses on healthy eating. In South Los Angeles one-third of the children under the age of 18 is overweight and the area generally has a higher rate of obesity, overweight individuals and diabetes than the Los Angeles County average. The teens note that part of the problem is that eight out of ten eateries in the area are either fast food or liquor stores. The teens also protest the lack of safe parks in the area for play and exercise.
Britanni Marie Dighero, a Youth Ambassador for We’re Fed Up explains, “We went with a social networking site because countless, countless numbers of teens have MySpace or Facebook or whatever. That’s what they do, they go on the Internet and they talk to each other.”
We’re Fed Up empowers youth to work for change in their community and invites teens from all over to help generate policy change in the community. They invite teens to join WereFedUp so they too can tell their friends how to make a difference.
As Youth Ambassador Darrell Williams said, “We have the technology, we can use it, and we should use it for a good purpose.”
