OT in the Home from TRPWellness
Many parents new to the special needs world will hear the term Occupational Therapy or OT and while it is actually a commonly used term outside the realm of special needs (especially after a physical injury), many people don't know quite what it means.

According to the American Occupational Therapy Association executive board (1976) as: The therapeutic use of work, self-care, and play activities to increase development and prevent disability. It may include adaptation of task or environment to achieve maximum independence and to enhance the quality of life."

In the case of special needs kids or adults, it could include a variety of sensory input that also integrates following steps in a process such as cutting out a shape from paper, then pasting it to another paper.
How does this include sensory input that helps someone with daily living skills? The act of opening and closing scissors actually takes much coordination, much more for those who have weak muscle tone, or sensory integration disorder. Using scissors helps develop that nerve and muscle use. Being able to follow the steps involved in even a simple task such as cutting and pasting, is something that many with special needs will have to practice and develop over time.

Other things involved in OT can involve working with a ball, exercise bands, or swimming. Even much of the playground equipment at your local park can help provide the tools that your child can use to engage their body and senses in developing.

However, there is nothing like being able to work with a trained professional. If you have trouble finding an OT in your area or if your insurance provider won't cover enough hours of OT, then using a home based system like the DVD's produced by TRP Wellness is the next best thing. The videos are clear, and easy to implement at home, plus they are a great resource to present to your child's teachers and other professionals when helping them learn about sensory integration.

If you would like a chance to win a DVD set from TRP Wellness, you can visit Special Needs Kids Talk Radio blog to read more and leave comments.
