How bad is Washington State Cougar football this year?  We're looking at a struggling team of epic proportions.

The casual fan would claim that the Washington Huskies are the worse team due to their winless record after eight games, compared to the Cougs one victory in nine.  Wazzu’s only win came against Portland State, a Division I-AA team, and not a very good one at 3-5.  Without the 48 points the Cougars put up against PSU, their total would stand at 63 for the year, an amount they have given up in a single game four times so far.  I guarantee it happens at least once more.

As someone who grew up hating Cougar football, this next stat makes me very happy.  WSU hasn’t scored since the first half of their game against Oregon State on Oct. 11.  No points in 10 quarters and about four and a half minutes.  None.  Now they’ll host an Arizona team that until last week against USC, didn’t have any trouble putting points on the board.  If the Wildcats can put up 42 against Cal, who scored 66 against the Cougs, imagine the carnage come Saturday’s game.

Husky fans do have something to cheer about though, because not only has their team has put up 113 points against only Div-I opponents (more than WSU,) they have managed not to allow more than 56 points against teams like USC and Oklahoma (opposed to WSU’s four 60+ point recessions.)

It looks like Washington State may not win again based on their schedule for the rest of the year.  They play Arizona, at Arizona State, the Apple Cup in Pullman and at Hawaii.  The only game that looks winnable is the yearly showdown with the Huskies.  But the same goes for UW’s remaining games.  Two in a row at home against ASU and UCLA, then it’s on the road for two, the Apple Cup and the Cal Golden Bears.  Washington could beat UCLA with Jake Locker at the helm, but Ronnie Fouch just doesn’t have the same skill set and leadership qualities as UW’s beloved number 10.

This year’s Apple Cup is going one of two ways.  Either it will be the sloppiest, turnover riddled blowout in the rivalry’s history, or two evenly-matched teams will play a hard fought contest that goes down to the wire.

Despite what happens between now and then, I’m still excited for the game, and the state will be split between Purple and Gold and Crimson and Gray no matter how bad their teams are.
