What a crazy Saturday.
Both of my teams lost today. I watched the Huskies miss three field goals and lose in double overtime to be crowned the worst team in Division 1-A football. I watched Oregon State miss an extra point to leave my Wildcats up by one point with just under four minutes left in the game. Arizona had to play conservative, and probably would have been better off tied, and after they punted, OSU drove down the field and punched in a field goal as time expired.
What is happening to my college football teams? The Huskies are 0-11, a heavy underdog at Cal next week and are looking for a new coach. The ‘Cats are 6-5 and although they are bowl eligible, probably need to beat Arizona State next week for a guaranteed bid. Oh, and those five losses are by a combined 28 points, leaving me to wonder what could have been if the cards had fallen the right way.
But back to UW. The Huskies need to find a head coach with a solid offensive plan. The next big dawg on campus has to be able to run a scheme that fits Jake Locker. He is the kind of player that can put up Tebow numbers in the right system. As for the team in Eastern Washington, Paul Wulff should keep his job for at least another year or two. He took over this program from the depths of hell and is doing his best to turn it around. The guy’s a legitimate HC and should be given a chance to shine in the years to come.
In the NBA, the nicest coach in the biz, P.J. Carlesimo, was fired as the leader of team who until recently had been known as the Seattle SuperSonics. Why? His squad sat at 1-12, and are now 1-13, and the players didn’t seem to want to listen to him.
This once again shows that moving the Sonics could have been a bad idea, and in a sad, desperate way, it makes me feel good inside. It’s pretty apparent that the fans from Oklahoma City would much rather have the 7-5 New Orleans Hornets back in town because they’ve been booing the home team and leaving early. All of this coming after a ridiculous amount of season tickets were sold and the hype around the new team in town was through the roof.
An excerpt from this article makes me wonder if the players even care about the current state of their team, and also could hint at the fact that the players didn’t feel like leaving Seattle either, “Carlesimo had questioned his team in recent games for failing to give full effort, performances resulting in a string of blowouts. The last six losses were by double-digits, and most of those were even more out of hand before [Team Durant] rallied.” (AP)
This statement makes me think that the players don’t want to be in OKC. I would love to conduct a player survey, asking what city they would rather be playing in. It wouldn’t hurt to take a sample of opposing players and ask them which road city they like better, Seattle or Oklahoma City (which I prefer to say with a Sean Connery accent – but that’s just me still bitter.)
As for the Seahawks, I don’t really expect them to win this weekend, unlike the Huskies, so maybe they can treat local legends Jim Zorn and Shaun Alexander to a surprising loss to shake up the NFC East.
Or maybe I’m just delirious.
