The Retrievers have begun their season 2-0 in the America East Conference and managed to rally Friday night to beat New Hampshire despite going down 2-0 after the opening sets.
UMBC continues to get major contributions from its younger players. Sophomore Alyssa Lang led all hitters with 21 kills and 15 digs in the game, according to the UMBC athletics website.
Meanwhile, Retrievers coach Ian Blanchard -- never one to shy away from shaking up his lineup -- started sophomore Allie Spaay at setter for the first four sets, moving senior Kira Giles to the back row. The previous week against Towson, Giles became just the fourth Retriever to record 3,000 career assists.
Giles ended up moving back to center for the fifth set, and recorded 15 assists and 14 digs. Spaay, who returned to her customary starting position on the back row in the final set, tallied 35 assists and 17 digs.
UMBC next plays in Vestal, N.Y., versus Binghamton.
