Situation Normal is far from your average garage band. This 5 piece ensemble plays their own brand of tight, high-energy rock and reggae, and jams flawlessly from one song to the next. At a recent showcase at Whispers in Glen Burnie, Maryland, they rocked out with a mix of covers and original tunes. The demo album handed out at the show was recorded at Omega Studios in Silver Spring, Maryland and has production quality to rival "the majors."
Nick Augustine, Greg Houget and Matt Belzer skillfully rotated keyboards, bass and guitar between songs, while Elle Baskin's soulful vocals and Matt Johnson's drumming built a smooth foundation - even while the music drastically changed time signature. After opening with a reggae jam, they did a flawless cover of Nena's "99 Red Balloons", and then switched between originals and tight covers of Devo, 311, and the Cardigans.
Members said Situation Normal's range is influenced by "the Grateful Dead, 311, Corner Store Heroes, Q and not U, Dismemberment Plan, Modest Mouse, Sublime and the Disco Biscuits. However, thier orignial "Electricity can be Deadly" sounds like the B-52's, and the insturmentals behind "You're on Fire" sound straight out of a Bond flick. They have opened for 3/Fifths at the 8x10, and Second Self at the Penguin Pub.
At Whispers, unlike the skilled production of their recorded album, it was clear the in-house engineer was not familiar with their vocals and did not properly balance the mics. Oh well, "Situation Normal..."
See them July 24, 2009 at the Brass Monkey Saloon in Baltimore, Maryland and at the Battle of the Bands in Potomac, Maryland on July 25.
