Arne Duncan and Hope Foundation leader address teachers’ union convention
Education Secretary Arne Duncan recently addressed 7,000 National Education Association delegates in San Diego to finish outlining the changes that lie ahead for schools and administrators.
Duncan was booed and shouted at by the teachers’ union members when he talked about merit pay and teacher reform, and he also angered audience members when referencing the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).
“What would happen to a student who behaved in that manner in the classroom or at a school assembly?” asked Andrea Hermitt in ”If students behaved the same as teacher's union members.” .jpg)
The tone changed somewhat when Alan Blankstein, HOPE Foundation President and award winning author of “Failure Is Not an Option” followed Duncan as a speaker.
Blankstein used allusions to popular music and animal biology to connect his points with the audience.
He discussed the successes of the HOPE Foundation, tying and called on educators to pursue a “clear shared purpose for all students’ learning.”
HOPE—Harnessing Optimism and Potential through Education—has documented success in partnering with school districts to:
- Close achievement gaps within and between schools
- Increase leadership capacity and responsibility at all levels
