A $15 million science and math public charter school will open in fall 2010 on the Detroit riverfront, according to The Detroit News.
The announcement of the new charter high school comes as Detroit Public Schools Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb continues to announce major reforms, including job cuts and school closings.
“We hope the investment will spur redevelopment of the city's far east-side neighborhood,” said a representative of the Thompson Education Foundation, which is funding the building.
Former businessman Bob Thompson once offered up to $200 million to create 15 charter high schools in Detroit, but was turned down. People felt that he was an "outsider from the suburbs," and the teachers' unions feared that too many charter schools would endanger their jobs.
