A high school cast recently tackled the difficult Gershwin musical “Crazy for You,” and received three well-deserved standing ovations.

While watching the magic of the performances at Mercy High School in Farmington Hills, MI, it was easy to forget the sacrifices, the tears, and the late night practice/study sessions endured by my daughter and the others who were in the play.

“The scenery, the dancing, and the overall production were all more complicated than our usual productions,” explained Mrs. Kathy Sill, the director of the show. She isn’t sure that she would tackle this particular project again.

Yet every member of the audience that I heard was buzzing that this was one of the best high school plays they have ever seen.

The tap dancing, scenery, and level of acting and singing were close to professional level. Several of the students in the production plan to study theatre in college.

My daughter does not want to major in theatre, but she sure does love it as a hobby. She was thrilled to be chosen as a cowboy, and was on stage singing and dancing for many of the group songs.

In addition to all of the hard work and trials, the students sure did have fun, especially behind the scenes.

They did amazing things with makeup and costumes. Some of the cowboys were from the local boys’ school, but since Mercy is an all girls' school, many of the cowboys were girls who were dressed up to look like boys.

When watching a performance like this, it is easy to become a believer in the importance of offering the arts in school. Not only does an experience like this prepare students for future careers, it gives them invaluable confidence.

The theatre is also an outlet for all of that teenage angst, especially for those who don’t care for sports.

"Crazy for You" is a high energy comedy that includes mistaken identity, plot twists, fabulous dance numbers and classic Gershwin music.

Memorable Gershwin tunes include I Can't Be Bothered Now, Bidin' My Time, I Got Rhythm, Naughty Baby, They Can't Take That Away from Me, But Not for Me, Nice Work if You Can Get It, Embraceable You and Someone to Watch Over Me.

"Crazy for You" was a book written by Ken Ludwig, lyrics by Ira Gershwin, and music by George Gershwin

Billed as “The New Gershwin Musical Comedy”, it is largely based on the songwriting team’s 1930 production, "Girl Crazy," but interpolates songs from several other productions as well.

"Crazy for You" won the 1992 Tony Award for Best Musical.
