Dangerous college professor still missing
University of Georgia professor George Zinkhan III is still on the loose after allegedly murdering his wife and two others Saturday. .jpg)
Authorities have put out nationwide alerts for Zinkhan, a 57-year-old white male, last seen wearing a polo shirt and blue shorts. He may be driving a 2005 red Jeep Liberty with Georgia license plate AIX1376.
As of 9:00 a.m. this morning, there have no leads, and no hits on his cell phone, ATM use, credit card, or passport.
The search is focusing on the city of Athens, 70 miles east of Atlanta, which has many major highways that easily lead out of town and out of state. Zinkhan has family in Austin, Texas, and a home in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Police and witnesses say that Zinkhan shot his 47-year-old wife, attorney Marie E. Bruce, as well as Ben Teague, 63, and Thomas Cole Tanner, 40. Two others were wounded.
After the murders, the university sent a text alert to students, using the UGA Alert system, which began after the Virginia Tech killings in March.
The shooting happened Saturday afternoon outside the Athens Community Theater, home to the Town and Gown Players group. The theater company was hosting a picnic lunch Saturday for current and former members.
Witnesses say that Zinkhan argued with his wife and an unidentified man preceding the shootings. He then left the event and returned a few minutes later with two handguns.
After the shootings, Zinkhan apparently took his 8 and 10 year old children to a neighbor’s home before disappearing.
Most who knew Zinkhan say that he did not fit the stereotype of a professor. In fact, many of his neighbors, who say that he was very reclusive, thought that he was a landscaper or construction worker.
Zinkhan wrote over 100 academic articles, and also a poem that was posted to a page of the American Marketing Association website:
“the dark department head is always lurking,
making the rounds with a crooked, yankee-trader smile,
full of false promise about a better time to come.”
