If you spend any time in Hillsboro Village, you may have walked right by Nashville’s Smallest Art Gallery without even knowing. That’s because they aren’t kidding with that name; the gallery was once a display case, measuring almost 40 inches tall by 29 inches wide and about 4.5 inches deep. It’s located on the wall between Posh Shoes and Peabody Shoe Repair, which is on the corner of 21st and Belcourt Avenue. The gallery boasts solar-powered lights, which mean two things: it’s completely self-sufficient and you can go anytime.
The shows change monthly, so you have a few more days to catch June’s show, “Cut-n-Paste” by artist Lauren Rolwing. Featuring sixteen two-dimensional pieces of characters and creatures created out of paper, the show is colorful, a bit whimsical and guaranteed to make you smile. Rolwing takes full advantage of the gallery’s depth with a three-dimensional town sitting below the rest of her works. Assorted buildings, plants, critters and even cars spring up from the bottom of the gallery, extending up to the hanging pieces in the form of black birds flying amongst them. The various layers and textures of paper as well as some pencil work give a depth and dimension to the pieces that makes each seem like a suspended second in a very active life. The entire show evokes children’s books and fairy tales, right down to the slightly sinister elements those often possess. All can be viewed are available for sale on the gallery's site, but truly need to be seen in person for full appreciation of the depth and detail packed into such small spaces.
