For many mountain bikers, the 4th of July is an opportunity to take the trusty, old mountain bike to a far away place to enjoy exciting new trails followed by great food and fireworks. That is what is done in the northernmost town in Michigan, a little town called Copper Harbor.

Situated at the peak of the Keweenaw Peninsula, an outdoor mecca branching into Lake Superior from the northern side Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Copper Harbor offers the best riding in the Midwest. With trail systems in Copper Harbor, Houghton, Hancock, Calumet and Greenland, the Keweenaw offers over 80 miles of singletrack ranging from fast and flowy to slow and technical. To experience all of these trails in one week is a difficult feat, although possible. Copper Harbor boasts over 20 miles of singletrack with significantly more being added every year.  The exciting singletrack attracts trail runners, as well.

The Stairway to Heaven is a boardwalk built in 2008
to remedy erosion and drainage issues with the
underlying trail.

With over 400 feet of elevation, the Copper Harbor trails offer challenging climbs and fast descents.  The terrain is primarily bedrock, so the trail surfaces can be quite technical.  The trail crew uses a jackhammer to smooth out the trail surfaces for the intermediate trails.  Copper Harbor is home to Paul's Plunge, a fun, technical trail that ends with the plunge, a scary descent that is a popular spectator site for the Copper Harbor Fat Tire Festival on Labor Day weekend.

Copper Harbor regularly sees visitors from Lower Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois. Many of the Keweenaw residents also journey to Copper Harbor for an incredible 4th of July experience. A typical 4th of July for Copper Harbor is actually a unique experience. Many people begin their day with a gentle hike around town followed by breakfast. Several hours of mountain biking ensue, followed by an exquisite dinner at the award-winning Harbor Haus, where every table has a spectacular view of Lake Superior.

Kayaking is a popular activity in Copper Harbor, and many people head out to watch what is arguably one of the best fireworks displays in Michigan – from their kayaks. The Keweenaw Adventure Company offers a sunset kayak tour, which includes fireworks on the 4th of July. The Adventure Company also offers a Surf and Turf, a guided-tour of the mountain bike trails followed by kayaking.

If you are looking for an Independence Day that offers plenty of activities to compliment the best mountain biking in the Midwest, Copper Harbor is the place to be.
