Mountain biking 101: Sharing trails with hunters
With the crisp, fall air come hunters. Michigan is dotted with many areas of public land that contain mountain biking trails. Much of this land is shared with hunters. While the prospect of sharing public land with hunters strikes fear into the hearts of many mountain bikers, there are a few tips mountain bikers can follow to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for both user groups.
- Most hunters head out in the early morning or evening. Mountain bikers can do their best to avoid hunters by scheduling their rides for the middle of the day.
- Hunter orange is not just for hunters. Mountain bikers should consider wearing hunter orange or other bright colors so they are easily recognizable to hunters.
- Avoid game areas. Game areas were developed for hunting. Mountain biking is enjoyed in many parts of Michigan throughout the year. Specific types of hunting are reserved for only a few weeks out of the year. Respect hunters and their annual opportunity to hunt by avoiding game areas.
