Lance Armstrong appeals to mountain bikers
The 2009 Tour de France is an exciting event, not just for road cyclists, but for mountain bikers, as well. It is an inspiring race, especially with the presence of
Lance Armstrong, who dabbled a bit in mountain biking. Of course, in true Lance fashion, he did not just dabble. He actually did pretty well.
In 2008, Lance participated in the
Leadville 100, in Leadville, Colorado. The Leadville 100 is an out-and-back mountain bike race ridden on mostly dirt roads and doubletrack. The turnaround at mile 50 and 12,600 feet of elevation is preceded by a 7-mile climb. Lance took second place to
Dave Wiens, who is seven years Lance's senior. Dave won by almost two minutes.
Lance, along with teammates
Max Taam and
Len Zanni won the men's trio in the
12 Hours of Snowmass, in Snowmass, Colorado. Racing under the team name of
Livestrong, they took first over the only other men's trio team to complete 17 laps, Team Beaver Creek, by more than six minutes.
Lance is currently competing in the 2009 Tour de France. He was running in third by the end of Stage 8 from Andorre-la-Veille to Saint-Girons. Not surprisingly, mountain bikers are watching intently.
