Every second Saturday of every month AQUA (Asian/Pacific Islander Queers United for Action) takes over Cobalt/Thirty Degrees to bring out the party inside all of us; so take a peek!
The organization was founded in 1997 and it’s an all-volunteer group which attempts to empower the gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning members of the Asian and Pacific Islander community in the city. AQUA focuses on queer API issues and interests, striving to project (and protect) a positive image of queer API men in the community through advocacy, education, outreach and social events.
The group argues it cannot be all things to all people, and it wasn’t their primary intention to begin with.
Back in the 2000 Pride Parade, AQUA marched with two organization that were making the rounds, one serving lesbian Asians (APIQS), and another serving queer South Asians (KHUSH-DC). It was somewhat understood that AQUA served primarily queer Asian men. That year 2000, these three groups marched together in the Capital Pride Parade as one group: A.K.A (AQUA, KHUSH-DC, and APIQS). With these three organizations, and other groups available, AQUA is the main organization to cater to queer Asian men.
