Okay, so maybe some feel like it’s just another sermon coming, but it’s true. Smoking is a bad, bad habit. Well, at least the DC Center believes so, and with the disturbing statistics, it’s hard not to agree.
Starting Thursday July 9th, the center is offering Freedom from Smoking classes, through Out To Quit. The seven week class offers tobacco replacement therapy, including free nicotine gum and patches, for those involved.
Reports say that smoking-related deaths make up roughly 438,000 in a year, which is more than alcohol, suicide, homicide, AIDS, car accidents, and illegal drug related deaths combined. Now, that’s a lot.
More interestingly, the GLBT community makes up for a large percentage of tobacco users. With many companies targeting the community at pride events and media outlets, GLBT adolescents are far more likely to be addicted to tobacco. In a national study 47% of females, and 36.7% of males reporting same-sex attraction or behavior smoked, compared to the 29% of the rest of the young people who were part of the study.
Luckily, the center is offering these free classes starting this week, and even if you don’t find the information alarming, yet want to try to quit, please contact them through their email readytoquit@thedccenter.org or call 202-682-2245 and sign up!
