Maui Info 101 on the best beaches for snorkeling on Maui, now takes you to part three which is the South Side of Maui.
The South Side Maui includes the following areas:
Kihei, Wailea, and Makena, and then South of Makena.
This is the dry side of the island with an annual rainfall of 4 inches a year, and is becoming increasingly popular because there is affordable, I use that term loosely, as we are talking about Maui here, accommodations, it also has some real great snorkel areas.
The learn to snorkel often time tourists will head to one of the Kamaole Beaches that are locally referred to Kam 1, 2 and 3. Kam Three has my favorite snorkeling of these three choices, and yes, there are long white sand beaches to lie upon.
There is better snorkeling however, if you continue south. Actually, any of the Wailea beaches are great for snorkeling. Walk out with your mask, fins, and snorkel, after parking at the public beach access areas, and look for the reef, or other snorkelers in the water, and swim on out. It is a tropical paradise.
When you continue driving further south on the road, it starts into volcanic terrain. There is wonderful snorkeling down here.
Remember there are no lifeguards, so buddy up, and at some point along that road further South, you will see an area called Ahihi Reserve. This is a Marine Reserve and a beautiful snorkel, but a bit shallow, with you beach to lay out on. Be really careful. You will see the backside of Molokini Crater, which is the other Marine Reserve down South here, but you will need a vessel to get out to this very popular snorkel spot, which is often billed as the six top snorkel spot in the world.
Have fun my friends, and remember that all important sunscreen.
