Amma (means Mother) the Hugging Saint was born in 1953 in a poor fishing village in Kerala, India. Sudhamani is the real name for Amma. For 35 years she has dedicated her life towards welfare of the humanity through the simplest of gesture- an embrace. Amma has helped nearly 25 million around the world through an embrace with the same loving way without any discrimination.

Amma, the Hindu Saint never had a spiritual mentor or guru nor was she exposed to philosophical books, her Self-realization and wisdom seemed to spark from the constant embrace of the God.

Amma follows the mission of loving and serving one and all, caressing and consoling a trouble soul, and wiping their tears till the last breath of her life. Amma has never sought to convert anyone because she believes that even the smallest contributions from a person can be a generous gesture towards the humanity.

Amma organizes various humanitarian activities like

Workshop on Values with Young children: Amma loves to interact with young children and receives them with love and respect. She believes that youngsters need to understand the purpose of life and through the workshops on Value the young children can learn and inspire through interaction.

Satsang: Satsang means association with the wise. Amma believes as individuals interact and meet with wiser people they are more likely to understand the value of divine love and have a spiritual life.

Circle of Love: Amma’s Circle of Love program is a practical example of universal compassion. The purpose of this program is to provide a network of compassionate service between those devotees who are in need of assistance and those who would like to help them. The program involves writing letters, visiting elders and sufferers, and book donations.

Community Projects: Some of the community projects taken up by the Satsang groups all over India and USA are
Amma’s Hands: This project provides material support like books, food, living supplies, and services like transportation, hospital visits to prison inmates and poor people.
San Francisco Shower Project: This project provides around 200 hot showers along with food and clothing on every weekend to the homeless in SFO.
S.A.V.E (Shelter Against Violent Environments): It’s a non-profit organization based in Northern CA, who works to provide support to victims of domestic violence through support services, advocacy and education.

Power of Prayer: Amma believes that a sincere prayer can make a person cope through difficult times. She believes in praying daily and seeking the help of Almighty to help making decisions.

Preserve the Environment: Amma believes in keeping the environment Green. The volunteers who work towards this cause call themselves as Green Friends.  She also thinks that planting a tree can be a selfless service to a society.
